How do I stop Word from locking up?

I have downloaded all the updates there are to no avail. The sucker keeps
locking down no matter which pc I get on. Dont think it is the network
('cause I do have problems there) because I have the same problems logged off
and saving to the desktop.
I think I need to remove it and put the old version back on.
