I bought this PC with Works and have since installed Word.
Word has been uninstalled and reinstalled but it still opens at a Header

Do you mean that when you create a new blank document, it opens with the
insertion point in the header pane? I have seen reports of this before and
don't know what could cause it.

First, be sure it's really opening in the header pane and that the problem
is not just that you have the white space hidden (see
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/WhiteSpace.htm).

If that's not the problem, try the solution offered at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/SaveViewAndZoom.htm.

If that doesn't solve the problem, look at Tools | Macro | Macros to see if
their is an AutoNew macro that might be causing the problem.

Note that uninstalling and reinstalling rarely helps with such problems
because it does not touch Normal.dot or the Registry, which are two of the
most common sources of problems.

"Suzanne S. Barnhill" Yes, it does open in the header pane.
Thank you, Suzanne. Sadly the I don't seem to be able to open Normal.dot.
I am in Windows 2003 and XP.
User templates in Options include 'C:\...\Microsoft\Templates but no access
that way. Windows Find (and Replace) seemed just to be looking through an
unspecified document as though for words!
There MUST be another way to find Normal.dot (?) I WAS able to find
Normal.dot (global template) in Macro/Macros as one of a list but it is
'created by (me) on 11th Nov 2005 and I can't 'create' anything.
Only slightly despairing...
