How do I superimpose two images in PowerPoint?

I have two images which are similar and I would like to superimpose them on a
single PowerPoint slide, but I don't know how to get PowerPoint to do that.
For instance, I have the two images printed out on clear overheads and I can
put them on top of each other on an overhead projector to make the composite
image I want, but I'd prefer to have it in my PowerPoint presentation that
way. Do you know how I do this? I have the one slide and the other slide
already in PowerPoint, I just need to somehow tell PowerPoint to combine
these two slides "on top of one another."

Inserted pictures can not have the overall level of transparency set, but
shapes filled with those very same pictures can.

Instead of using insert picture, create a rectangle. Then Click on Format
=> AutoShape => Colors & Lines (tab) => select Fill Effects from the Color
pulldown menu => Picture (tab) => Select Picture => navigate to the picture
you want to insert => Insert => OK => Use the slider to set the transparency
to about 50% => OK

Use Photoshop or another image editing program to remove all the parts of
the picture except the parts you want to be included. Don't forget to save
to an image type that supports transparency (PNG or GIF). Then, when you
add the pictures with the parts removed, animate them to appear and they
will overlay the previous picture, but only where there is something to
show.
