How do I trace the sucessors/predessors of a single task?

I want to look at a single task like I would a critical path seeing only all
links related to the task I have selected. I know there is a third party
solution, but is there one in Project?

Hello!

Welcome to this Microsoft Project General Questions Discussion Group.

You can use a combination view of the Gantt chart on top and the
Relationship Diagram view on bottom.

I hope this helps. Please let us know how you get along with it.

Two things. First, you will need a macro to trace all the predecessors to
that exact task and then (2) filter to only those tasks. I believe Rod Gill
has a Macro to do something similar in his book which is available from
msprojectexperts.com

Another choice (the one I use) is a third party product called Pert Chart
Expert. What you do is select the task, click the PERT Chart button and then
you can trace from there with two mouse clicks. The product is not expensive
and works well.

Using the Network Diagram in the bottom pane may work for you. However,
this will display all tasks visible in the upper pane and you need something
to filter our the "path to this task" as well. If you can live without the
extra filter and do it with your own eyes, then Jose has your immediate
solution.

If you are using Project 2007, use the "What is Driving my task?" feature,
it will give you the single task or infomration that is driving that task.
P2010 will be more robust in this area but will also only identify the single
task.

Hi docaddy,

View the Network Diagram. Select the task and then Shift-Click on the same
task again. This will show you all the successors to that task. That's
half what you want!

I think Glen has it. Just add a filter to the upper view to show "critical"
tasks.
