How do I turn off a symbol that appears when I type " or ' ?

When I try to type using quotation marks or itlaics, I get an i with an
accent mark on top of it--obviously one of the language symbols. I haven't
set up the keyboad for another language and Word permits me to use these
punctuation marks. I am confused/

Go to Tools > Auto Correct Options > Auto Correct and see if you have the quote
marks set to be replaced with the i. The listing is alphabetical, so if they
are there they will precede abbout, for example.
