How do I turn off Document Map?

I've been working on a document, and somehow the Document Map option under
the View menu got turned on and no matter how many times I turn it off, when
I re-open the document, it appears again. This makes it almost impossible to
send anywhere. I have to send the document and tell the recipient to go to
the View menu and uncheck the Document Map option. What can I do to
permanently make it go away. I prefer to work and send documents in page
layout form.

Any suggestions? This is my resume.
