How do I turn off file conversion. It's affecting all my files

All my files have becomeconverted to some strange text. I have no idea what
I did or didn't do. The message comes up giving me 3 choices, Window
(default) MS dos or other decoding. I've tried all 3 at various times but
nothing works.
I really need my files. Can someone sugest something?

Are these documents on floppy disc? In which case they are nor converted but
corrupted. Never access floppy disc from Word.

I think it's OK to *read* them (a kind of access) but NEVER to write to
removable media from Word. So it isn't the reading that's done it. They got
corrupted when they were written.

No, they are not on floppy disk.

Next thing to check: In the "File > Open" dialog, is the file type set to
"Recover text from any file"?
