How do I turn off select mode?

Somehow I ended up in some sort of text highlighting or selecting mode, and
nothing would get me back to regular text input mode. I had be trying to
extend the page downward, but never did figure that out, and then any sort of
choice I made would just extend or reduce the amount of selected text.

Do you mean with the mouse? Or are you using a Tablet?

You probably want one of the submenus under Tools |
Drawing and Writing Tools.
