If you're willing to forgo spelling corrections as well, you could modify
the Footnote Text style to turn off proofing. Format | Style: Footnote Text
| Modify | Format: Language: "(no proofing)" (Word 97 and earlier) or "Do
not check spelling or grammar" (Word 2000 and above).

I am a student. I write essays. I like Word's grammar check feature that
notes gramatical erorrs with a wavy green underline. I use footnotes for
references in my papers. The grammar checker always flags citations in my
footnotes. This is an annoyance. How do I turn off the grammar checker
only for footnotes and not for the body of my document?
