How do I turn off the footnote wizard?

I'm using Word 2000. I have never seen this before, but when Word was
reinstalled on my computer after I got Office XP, a "footnote wizard"
starting popping up whenever I want to insert a FN. Slows down the computer
for a bit, and if I click cancel instead of just closing the box, it doesn't
insert a FN at all and I have to start all over again. Can't find a way to
get rid of it. Any clues would be appreciated.
