How do I turn screen clippings into a JPEG image?

T

thatonenote

After taking a screen shot of a say landscape, I would like to turn it into a
JPEG image since those are easier to work with, and store it on the computer
as a separate image file, how do I go about it... Moreover, it is in fact a
Sony digital picture (that means I should be able to increase its size/zoom
in with clarity at a later stage), and that clarity I cannot find in Paint.

Once the image is screen captured, paste it into an image editing program
and save as .jpg.

You can right click the screen clipping itself (not the container, just the
graphic) and select "Save As" to save the image as a PNG, but I don't think
you can save it as a JPEG.

Can you tell us more about why you want it as a JPEG instead of a PNG? I ask
because I prefer PNGs, so never thought of trying to save them any other
way.

In addition to the other suggestions:
If you don't need the clipping in OneNote and just want to have a file:
Select to copy the screenshot to the clipboard only and then paste it
into any graphics program of your choice.
My favorite for the easy things in so far is IrfanView [1], a fantastic
piece of freeware with a ton of features for handling images.

If you want to a professional toll for taking clippings, have a look at
SnagIt [2]. It offers very fine features for capturing (even scrolling

Sorry, could you pls be a bit more specific?
I don't understand what you mean in so far.

While working on the computer or the internet, the most common image file
type I come across is JPEG, though that doesnt indicate its better than PNG..
I wouldn't mind PNGs myself, as long as the screen clipping can be saved as
a separate image file.

I'd like to point out that by right clicking the screen clipping, the option
for "Save As" is not available.

Sounds really strange!
Are you sure?
This is the standard.
"Save as .." is in the right mouse context menu, it's second item from
the top.

Don't you have this item at all or is it grayed?

The first, Irfan View, website opens a 403 Forbidden page.
The second unfortunately I wish I knew German...

What I meant in the second part of my question (increase size) is that after
I take a screen clipping, when I increase the size of the clipping, it
immediately begins to get blurry, whereas if I were to take a digital photo
from a digital camera, upload it onto the computer, then increase the size of
the photo, as per the resolution taken in the camera, it shouldn't get
blurry. The clarity should be maintained.

Sorry for the long para...

I'm sorry, didn't see that the SnagIt site was open in German when I
copied the URL from the browser.
As John Waller already said: There's a menu item on the Techsmith SnagIt
site for selecting the language ;-)

OK, now I see!
Unfortunately you are asking for something impossible.
A screenshot by nature has the resolution of the screen. As it's just
pixels, increasing the size of the image makes the result blurry. It's
the same with any existing tool for capturing things from the screen. It
can be different because of the technical basics.

Totally different with a photo. The resolution of a photo taken with a
digital camera normally is ways higher than what you see on your screen
when you opening it. You do not increase the image when you zoom the
view, you just increase what you *see*; unless you set the view to 100%
what you see on the screen is far below the *physical* resolution of the
image. When the view is set to 100% and you then further increase the
scale, the result will also look blurry.

To make it short: With screen-shots on has to accept the resolution of
the image caused by the resolution of the screen.

P.S. I still seem not to really understand what you are after. Could it
be that you want to make a screen-shot of a photo shown on your monitor
(or a part thereof) and put this into ON or save it as a file?
This would mean to saddle the horse from the wrong end. You'd need some
graphics tool and use cut/copy + paste.

The item is not there at all. The following items turn up on right click in
this order :

Cut
Copy
Paste
Move (grayed)
Resize (grayed)
Extra Writing Space
Note Flags
Remove Note Flags from Selection (grayed)

Ah ha - a hint! It looks like you aren't right clicking on a selected item,
but instead on the background. Which leads me to wonder if the screen
clipping is on the page background instead of foreground.

Can you remind us which version of OneNote you are running? I can't find it
in the thread...

I have been right clicking on the selected item.
It is not the page background, but on the foreground.
The OneNote I'm using is from 2003.
