How do I type a letter over another letter? i.e. an X over an O

I am trying to type some letters to overwrite other letters. In older
programs like Displaywrite (in the old days) this could be done. I imagine
Word is capable, but I am not able to figure out. I am not referring to
'strikethrough' of a line through the words.
