How do I type a long dash? I've lost the "Insert" symbol option

I'm having difficulty typing a long dash (I tried a command and it just
brought up a strange cursor). When I tried to get rid of the cusor, the
"insert symbol" option on the toolbar disappeared. Yikes!

Have you changed font styles? It may not be in your current font. Take
a look for the character map and see if you can find whatever character was
being used before. You can insert any character that is installed by using
the copy and past functions.
