i need to do a telephone that will automatically arrange alphabetically when
i finish. i have tried the tool - sort program, but it doesn't work with
anything except names, not street addresses or phone numbers. they just get
jumbled up.

I would keep the database in Excel and mail merge it into a (my choice:
Publisher) template.

If your list is in a Word table with columns for name, address, phone
number, etc., then no matter which column you choose to sort on, the
entire entry for each name will be sorted according to that column.
(Addresses won't get detached from names.) So you could also sort on
ZIP codes if you need to mail your envelopes sorted that way, for
instance.

If you put each address in a single paragraph you should be able to sort it
properly. Arrange it as follows:

LastName, FirstName<line break>
Street Address<line break>
City and State<line break>
Phone Number, etc.<paragraph break>

This is just a suggestion; you can put the phone numbers on the right, using
tab stops, include email addresses, etc. The main point is to end each line
except the last with a line break (Shift+Enter) instead of a paragraph
break. You will then be able to sort by paragraphs. Do not press Enter twice
between paragraphs; when you sort, Word will place all the empty paragraphs
at the top of the list. Instead, add some Spacing Before/After to the
paragraph (you can easily add 12 points Spacing Before by pressing Ctrl+0).

If you have Outlook, set Outlook as your default e-mail application and keep
the addresses/numbers in Outlook contacts list(s). Outlook will sort thyem
automatically without user involvement. You can use mail merge to produce
printed 'phone books from the data
