how do i type beside a photo?

Set the wrap property of the picture as approprate, but not to in-line with
text.

Alternatively, insert a two column, one row table into your document and put
the picture into one of the columns and the text in the other.

Allright,

rightclick on the picture
choose format picture
then pick "layout"
then pick the picture/scheme that suits you best

this works for MS Word 2002,

if you have MS Word 2007 then:
rightclick image
choose "text flow"
pick whichever option suits you best and type :)
