How do I type in Hiragana (Japanese) in Word?

I would like to type in the phonetic/romanized spelling of a word (eg.
Watashi) and have it appear in Japanese characters. Is this possible without
the character map?

Since you haven't gotten an answer here, you might try asking in the
international features newsgroup:

I think, in order to do this, you'd have to have an IME for Japanese installed
and a Japanese keyboard layout. But I'm just guessing...

I suspect it's not possible - you are, in effect, asking for automatic
translation. A Japanese IME allows you to enter Japanese characters out of
components but not out of romanised spelling. Like Cindy, I'm just guessing
though.

Ok, I'm actually going to answer my own question. First, I had to install
necessary the updates on Word by going to Microsoft.com. After that, I went
to the Control Panel and changing my regional languages. I added Japanese
and then I could toggle between the two languages. I used this other
keyboard to type in Word.

Thanks for all of your responses.
