how do i unlock a chart

i am working with workbooks that i unprotect to modify but some of the
charts seem to still be locked after unlocking sheet

Bob -

Check the sheet protection. Then check some chart protection modes you
can only get to in vba:

ActiveChart.ProtectionMode, .ProtectSelection, .ProtectData,
..ProtectContents, .ProtectFormatting
