how do i unlock a modification selection in ms2007 word?

My son did something in MS Office 2007 Word, where when editing or creating a
document, one can not type in any text. The error message is
"This modification is not allow because selection is locked"
my son did not know what he did.
My question is how do i resolve this? I am unable to locate the product key
due to relocation of residence and things just got lost.

SOLUTIONS!!!

If this is a retail copy of Office 2007, it has not been activated. If it is
a trial version, it has expired. In neither case will the product key be
helpful.
