How do I use a custom property as a field in my document?

I use document properties, such as "Title" and "Author" in my docuemetnt by
inserting them as fields. I have made a custom property called "Document
Number", but how do I use it as a field?

use a DOCPROPERTY field referencing the name of the property

Mr West, I have a confession to make...

I was doing all that already, but had neglected to give the field a value.
Doh!

Thus, on using the field I received the error:

"Error! Unknown document property name"

The error message is not very helpful but I should have seen my mistake.
