how do I use connectors when they're grayed out?

The connectors option under AutoShapes isn't available - how do I make it
available?

Hi Borden,

In Word, the connectors are only active when you
start with Insert=>Picture=>New Drawing. In Word 2002/2003
that opens an Office Drawing Canvas. In prior versions
it opens the MS Draw Add-in (optional install for those versions).
