How do I use (format) a thumb drive?

I am a teacher at a school for blind students. If I type information and put
it on a "thumb drive", it can be put into a machine which will print Braille.
But I don't know what to do to put this information on the "thumb drive"
which I have purchased.
Please help me. (I need very explicit directions.)
