how do I use the pen in One Note efficiently?Do I need a device?

Is there a separate device to use the pen in One Note? The pen doesn't seem
real useful If I have to hold the touch pad key down and try to write...

the pen is designed for the tabletpc platform. You can try and write with
the mouse but you will be up against it. Be warned once you try onenote on a
tablet you will be addicted.

I agree so far. I would love to use the One Note features. Why can't
someone make the finger pad on a notebook act like a Tablet?

Handwriting in OneNote is best on a Tablet PC, using the digital Ink. Other
input is only by mouse or a writing pad, and is basically ineffective at
this point because the sampling rate is about 1/3 of that of the digital
input on a Tablet. On a Tablet PC each stroke which is made by the digital
pen is recorded, whereas other input only makes an image.

I agree so far. I would love to use the One Note features. Why can't
someone make the finger pad on a notebook act like a Tablet?

The touchpad doesn't have a high enough capture rate to get accurate
inking. You could take a stylus and "write" on the touchpad in OneNote if
you want, but you'll quickly discover that it's an awkward process.
