How do I write music symbols and staves in Word?

I need to insert my own musical examples in a curriculum project I am doing
for my school district. I know there is a template of staves, but I need to
put a variety of notes and symbols on the staff. Can I cut a paste from a
notation program such as FINALE. If so , how?

Word doesn't do music notation, mostly because it's very difficult to
position characters on top of one another. You'd be pretty much
reduced to using the drawing toolbar objects to draw the notation, and
it would be painfully slow.

You probably can use notation software, one way or another. What it
would require depends on the capabilities of the notation program. If
it can export or print or save notation as a text-like file (possibly
..RTF) or as a graphic file (JPG or GIF), that can be brought into a
Word document with either Insert > File or Insert > Picture > From
File.

If the notation program doesn't have any such options (for example, I
have NoteWorthy Composer, which doesn't do any of those things), you
can use a capture program such as SnagIt (www.techsmith.com). SnagIt
includes a printer driver that can convert the selected notation to
GIF, JPG, or PDF format, which you can then include in the Word
document.

Finale does have the ability to do this. In Finale, first switch to
Page View. Then select the Graphics tool (this is on the advanced tools
palette which you can turn on from the Window menu).

Double click and drag on the page, holding the mouse button down as you
drag, to create a selection box around the area that you want to
export. Then go to the Graphics menu >> Export Selection. Choose the
TIF file option and have it prompt you for the name of the file. Click
OK, then give the file a name and place it some place that's easy to
find (like the desktop).

Next, in Word go to the Insert menu >> Picture >> From File. Select the
file you saved and open it.
