I am trying to understand the relationship between the size of bitmaps
files and the amount that a .DOC file increases when the bitmaps are
imbedded.
I made a 9 page .RTF document containing 7 linked 16-color bitmap
pictures (BMP). The file size is of the RTF is 74 KB. The size of all
7 bitmaps combined is 550 KB.
When I save the RTF as a DOC file, its size is 3,600 KB. I suspect
that the bitmaps are now imbedded in the .DOC.
I saved the .DOC back to an .RTF -- the file size of the RTF is 3,600.
I had expected the final file size to be approximately:
74KG(text) + 550 KB(bitmap) = 624KB
Some conversions must be happening.
Question1: Why is the increase due to the imbedded bitmaps five times
more than expected?
Question1: What formats should I be using to obtain small file size?
(The bitmaps are screen shots of the menus of a software program --
for a user manual. I currently save them with [print screen and paste
them into Paint, and then save them as small 16-color BMP's.)
Information will be appreciated, Stan Hilliard
