How do resize objects (charts) in Excel to precise specs?

I am creating charts in Excel and want to paste them in Word. When in Word
they have to be resized so that I can fit on the page (say a 3 x 3 grid).
When I resize in Word, the text on the axes and legends is distorted or too
small. Is there a way to resize the chart in Excel to precise specs so that
when I cut and paste into Word, it looks cleaner and is already at the
appopriate size?

I would suggest copying the chart in Excel as a picture and then pasting it
into the Word document. To do so, click on (activate) the Excel chart.
Then, hold down the "shift" key. With the shift key held down, go to the
Excel toolbar and select Edit -> Copy Picture. Choose "as shown on screen"
for the size and appearance options. Open your Word document, go to the
toolbar, and hit Edit -> Paste.

The chart can then be proportionately repositioned based on your sizing
requirements.

Here's what the Word experts do.

Put each chart you want to copy onto its own chart sheet (Chart menu >
Location > As New Sheet). Measure the area you have in Word for the chart.
You need to make your chart this size in Excel. Activate the chart sheet, go
into Page Setup, and make your margins large enough so the chart matches the
size you need. Say it's 2" tall and 2.5" wide in Word. The paper is 8.5"
tall and 11" wide, so the top and bottom margins must be (8.5-2)/2 or 3.25"
and the left and right margins must be (11-2.5)/2 or 4.25". When the chart
is sized appropriately, adjust your formats, particularly the font sizes,
before copying and pasting. If the pasted chart in Word doesn't come out
right, it's better to fix it in Excel, then copy and paste it again, rather
than trying to fix it in Word.

To prevent pasting a huge proprietary workbook into Word (pasting a chart
actually pastes the entire workbook), copy or move the sheet into its own
workbook before copying. Alternatively, copy the chart as a picture (hold
Shift while selecting the Edit menu, then select Copy Picture, and select
the On Screen and Picture options).
