Becky

I want to use the same user definded fields in all my contact but when I add
a new contact I cannot get the user defined fields in this item to show up on
the new contact. How do you do that? Or can you??

Did you define it in the folder or on a custom form?

custom form: set the folder to use that form by default.

User-defined fields defined "for the folder" (any UDF added to a contact is
automatically added to the "folder list" of user fields).

That said, UDF's assigned in this fashion will NOT appear in any contact
(new or old) until data is explicitly entered for the given user field(s).
In contrast, if a custom form has been created and set as the default, all
UDF's will appear for each contact created using that custom form whether or
not data has been entered.
