How do you assign a Resource Calendar to a task?

G

GHawkins

I'm working with a Project file using Project 2003. I have one resource who
requires a different Working Time calendar because of his location (working M
- S rather than M - F like everyone else on this project). I have that set up
for him within his Resource Information. However, whenever I assign him to a
task, the Finish Date doesn't update correctly. For example, one of his tasks
begins on 10/1/07 with a duration of 11 days. However, the Finish Date is
10/15/07 rather than 10/12/07 like I'd expect. The resource is 100% dedicated
to that task, and the task is a Fixed Duration with a constraint type of As
Soon As Possible. I'm not extremely familiar with Project - I'm working with
a file someone else created - and so I'm not exactly sure what else I need to
look at.

Any ideas? Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Hello,
It works fine for me. Are you sure you assigned the good calendar to the
resource?

I'm not clear about what "M-S" means. If it's Monday to Sunday, then
I'd expect the task to finish on the 11th. If it's Monday to Saturday,
then I'd expect it to finish on the 13th. I don't see how it could be
the 12th. But the problem remains, it's showing on the 15th, which
isn't right in either case. It's the date you'd get if he works a 5
day work week.

A couple of questions. Are there any other resources assigned to the
task? On your Base Calendar, are there any non-working days between
Nov 1 and Nov 15? What are your default working hours? Are there any
partial days between Nov 1 and Nov 15?

Maybe some others can think other factor I'm missing.

Hope this helps in your world.

Hi GHawkins,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

I tried this in Project 2003 and it works as it should finishing on 12 Oct.
Try Format/Timescale.../Non-working time and select your resource's
calendar. This should show every Saturday as working time.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

So sory, by "M-S" I did mean Monday thru Saturday, I forget that Saturday and
Sunday both start with S....and as for the finish date, I meant to put the
11th rather than the 12th.

As for your questions:
Are there other resources assigned to the task? No, there is only one
resource assigned to it, and that is the resource with the changed calendar.

Are there non-working days between Nov 1 and Nov 15 on the Base Calendar?
Yes, there are 4 non-working days on the Base Calendar - one for each
Saturday and Sunday between November 1st and November 15th.

What are the default working hours? 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM
on Monday thru Friday.

Are there any partial days between Nov 1 and Nov 15? No, on the Base
Calendar and the Resource Calendar, there are no partial days.

I have a feeling it's a task setting or something that I'm just not
seeing....or something I didn't set up correctly....but I'm just at a loss!

I checked this out, and the Non-working time for that resource does show
Saturdays as working days. I'll check out that site to see if there is any
other information.

I must be doing something wrong, because even if I create a Project file from
scratch, create two resources (one with a Standard calendar, one based off
the Standard calendar with additional Nondefault working time specified) and
then create test tasks, assining the resource with Nondefault working time,
it still doesn't work. Weekends are still calculated into the finished date.
Is there a setting or something I'm missing? I would assume it calculates
based on the Resource Name by default....is that a wrong assumption?

Hi,

Hard to say what is going, because we obviously have never seen this.
Why don't you send me that little test file, I'll have a look and I'm sure
the problem will be visible

Hello GHawkins,

Just a shot in the dark here. Have you assigned a task calendar to the
task? Double click on the Task to show the Task Information dialog box.
Click the Advanced tab and make sure the Calendar is set to "None."

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
