How do you change the backspace function in Word 2007

I used to be able to highlight text and press "backspace" and the highlighted
text would be erased. Now when I highlight text and press "backspace," the
cursor just goes to the beginning of the highlighted text.

how do you change it back??

Tools | Options | Edit: Typing replaces selection. (Backspacing is
considered typing.)
