How do you delete a text box in the slide pane

I am currently in a class online where the text book is asking me to
duplicate a slide, then select the text box in the slide pane and then delete
it. I am following its advice but it is not working. I cannot delete the text
box from the slide pane or from the main slide itself. Any body have an idea
as to how I can accomplish this?

Try clicking the edge of the box and clicking the 'Delete' button on your
keyboard. Or try dragging your mouse across the screen to highlight the text
box and click Delete.

You can also use the TAB key to select items successively and when your box
is selected press the DELete key
