how do you determine the cell designation?

We can't seem to find a way, interactively, to show the cell row/column
number (Word 2002).

There's never been a way, despite repeated requests. But you can get the
address of the current cell using the TableCellHelper macro (see
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/SumAboveIncorrect.htm)

Or you can use "Tools > Customize...", and drag "Commands > All commands >
TableFormatCell" onto a toolbar or into a menu.

That command will show you the current row/column, if you select a cell
before using it.
