how do you get rid of smart tags?

I formatted a hard drive lately for a fresh re-installation of Windows,
Word etc, and went ahead WITHOUT installing smart tags. Everything was
going well. But then I opened a file that had been infested with those
annoying parasitic tags, and the smart tags are showing, and the code to
handle them seems to have miraculously appeared out of nowhere!

Is there a way to kill them off permanently?

It was turned off, but loading this document turned it back on again.
Life is getting to be one big battle against smart tags!

Who needs stem cells when Microsauce Word documents are a separate life
form?

I am having the same problem with "Markup" sponteously . . . spontanously .
.. . sponstaniously . . . automatically activating after weeks of dormancy.

I looked some more. Search in Help for "Troubleshoot smart tags" and then
see option 2 "I turned off smart tags, but they still show up in my
documents.."

I didn't see any "remove smart tags option" option myself but I did see that
clicking "save options" opened another dial. box that had two smart
tag-related options.

PS -

For turning off mark up I found this in Help under "Track changes while you
edit":

If you hide a type of markup by clearing it on the Show menu, the markup
automatically appears each time the document is opened unless you clear the
Make hidden markup visible when opening or saving check box on the Security
tab of the Options dialog box (Tools menu). Even if you clear this check
box, the markup is still in the document and can be revealed by selecting
the type of markup on the Show menu.
