How do you stop pointing to a project server when it is retired?

We no longer use MS Project. Unfortunately when we turned the project server
off our computers began to freeze because they were looking for the server
while we were doing other functions, such as opening Word documents.

If in Windows you go to All Programs, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Office
Tools, Project Server Accounts then delete the Project Server account you no
longer use (keep the Computer one), does that work?

You'd probably have to kill the connections in each document that points
to a MS Project document? I haven't seen that behavior, and couldn't imagine
quite how you'd get that to happen, but in Excel 2007 there's an option to
kill external links (Data > Connections).

I would imagine there's the same thing in Word, although I don't quite know
where to find it.
