Thanks for all the suggestions! The problem was a bit more complicated than what I wrote. I know all of the ways to mute sound on a computer. The original problem occurred on a Windows 2000 machine and I solved the problem using a computer running Windows XP. Then I used what I found out on the 2000 machinwe. What I finally discovered was that after you change the sound settings on the play control, you must reboot on the 2000 machine but not on Windows XP.
