How do you update a style after the current paragraph?

The fastest and easiest way for me to change a style was, make changes
to a paragraph, click the style box on the tool bar, press return, and
when word pops up a dialog box, check 'update the style after the
current paragraph (the exact message may not be this)'.

With Word 2002, however, this maneuver doesn't seem to work, as
nothing happens when I click the style box on the tool bar.

Is there a similar way to update a style in Word 2002?

Go to Tools/Options/Edit and make sure "Prompt to update styles" is
turned on.
