How does an end user get MSProject and Sharepoint to work together

I am wondering how one gets MS Project files to work with Sharepoint
Services. How do you configure your sharepoint site to work with MS Project
Server, and then how can you roll up Project info into your Sharepoint site?
Any help or directions to other websites would be greatly appreciated. I did
conduct several searches, but the results I have found are not for the end
user of the Sharepoint site. Right now, I have access to MS Project Server
2003 and Sharepoint services.
Thanks!

Assuming you have installed Project Server 2003 and Windows SharePoint
Services (WSS) correctly, then the two software packages integrate with one
another as follows:

1. When a project manager saves a project to the Project Server database, a
WSS subweb is automatically created for the project.
2. This WSS subweb gives access to Risks, Issues, and Documents for the
project.
3. This WSS subweb also gives access to the project workspace for the
project, which provides additional functionality such as Lists, Surveys,
etc.
4. When Risks, Issues, or Documents are created for a project, there are
indicators for each in the Indicators column of the Project Center page in
PWA.

Does this give you an idea of how the system is supposed to work? Hope this
helps.

Tina,
We have WSS installed as a companion to MS Project Server on the same server
and it functions as Dale described. There was not much to it out of the box
actually and the functionality is just as described.

If you don't mind I was wondering if Dale or any other folks have had
experience with using the full blown Sharepoint Portal on a different server
to support MS Project environment. I understand this is also an option rather
than running WSS on the same box.

Thanks, Andy

Integrating MS Project Server 2003 and WSPS 2003

Pedantic correction

"SPS 2003" not "WSPS 2003" which could easily be taken for Windows
SharePoint Services (actually=WSS).

Even the full name of SPS 2003 doesn't have a Windows in it - it's something
like Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003

Thank you for the overview - it does help to know how they are supposed to
work when trying to get them to actually work, if that makes sense. I
reinstalled Project Server 2003 and will try again.
Thank you!

Hi Dale,

This question takes the original post one step further and I am hoping you
can help me. I am trying to migrate SharePoint Sites that are integrated
with Project Server Schedules from one server to another. Both environments
are configured similarly with WSS/Proj Server 2003 on one box accessing
remote SQL servers.

I used the WSS stsadm command line utility to create a backup of the
SharePoint site on one server and then used the same command with the
"restore" option on the other server. The command works for all the
non-Project integrated stuff. However, when I click on Issues in the new
SharePoint site, I get an error because the SharePoint site still thinks the
published project is on the old server.

What process do I need to follow to migrate a WSS/Project Server site from
one server to another?

Thanks in advance,
Alyssa

Hi Alyssa,

Re-install WSS and during the installation instead of creating the WSS
Config and Content databases have it point to the databases that are
already created on your remote SQL Server.

Do the same with Project Server.

Good Luck!
