How does one upgrade from Word98 to Word2004 and from OS 9.1 to OS X at the same time?

I have Word 98 on an OS 9.1 Wall Street Powerbook. I've ordered a new Mac
Mini Intel.
As I understand it Word98 won't even run on a Mac with an Intel CPU. I'm
eligible
to buy Word2004 as an upgrade but how could I in fact upgrade Word98?

Is it possible to install Word98 on the Mac Mini and upgrade it without
"running" it?

You never need to install it. Just insert the Office 98 CD into the CD tray
so the updater can detect it. (This in turn means, I guess, that you first
need to drag the Microsoft Office 2004 folder from the 2004 CD to your
/Applications folder, rather than use the Installer Assistant, since you
obviously can't have two CDs inserted at the same time, nor will the 2004
Updater work if it doesn't see an earlier Office anywhere.) After copying
the 2004 Office folder from the 2004 CD to disk, remove the 2004 CD, insert
the 98 CD, and try to launch any Office 2004 application (e.g. Word). That
will jump-start the installation and detect Office 98 for upgrading.

Is your advice any different if a 30-day-trial copy of Word 2004 is present
on the computer?

I just won an eBay auction for the Word 2004 for OS X Update and intend
to put it on my Mac Mini (Intel CPU, OS 10.4.5) and wonder how my trial copy of
Word 2004 (which I've only been using for 2 of the alloted 30 days)
will react to this.

You need to run the "Remove Office" application you'll find in the
Additional Tools folder in Microsoft Office 2004 folder (even in the Trial
copy) to remove the Trial copy of Office. (Don't worry, it won't touch your
data, including Entourage database if you've been using it.) Having the
Trial around after you install the real thing creates various messes.
