How does PowerPoint edit a PPTX

Hi,

I installed PowerPoint 2003 along with the 2007 converter packs, now PP 03
can open , edit and save PPTX also.
I wanted to know how is PP03 editing the format which he do not understand
because PPTX is entirely different from PPT, Is it creating a temp ppt for
editing which it saves finally as a PPTX using the converter? I guess this
must be the case because we can not edit smart arts or PPTX specific features
there.

The other though which come to my mind is that it might be creating a
mapping of bject which are editable in PPT between the PPTX and a temp file.
Now it allows u to edit all those editable objects. And finally updates the
actual PPTX object model and saves the original PPTX file.

Regards
Rahul

The converter pack converts PPTX files to 97-2003 format when you open the
files; because of this, PPT 2003 can edit them.

However, some of the new features in 2007 simply aren't supported in 2003, so
they get converted to images rather than editable PPT shapes.

But if it converts it into a temp ppt file and edit it, then there are some
features which can not be saved in the PPT format (e.g. "Animation applied to
placeholders on custom layouts is removed if saved")
What happens to those things, are they still kept intact while saving the
temp ppt as a PPTX or they are lost?

Some PPT 2007 features are stored in a special way within the PPT so when you reopen
into PPT2007, they're still there. But editing the PPT can interfere with this
"secret round-trip" feature.

Does this mean "We should not edit a PPTX with PowerPoint 2003 if we want to
preserve all of PPTX features in it. else PowerPoint 2003 may mess up with
them while saving"
Is it correct?
