How does project check out work

Thought I had posted this question, but don't see it, now.

Can anyone give me a pointer to something that documents what is going
on inside PDS when projects are checked out?

Specifically, I'm interested in knowing how much of the process is
managed by entries made into the database versus how much is maintained
in Project Server.
