How fixed work is distributed among multiple resources

Adrian

I'm quite new to MS Project and I try to solve the following issue:

I have two employees, A and B.

Employee A works every day from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM (6 hours)
Employee B works every day from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM (6 hours)

I have a task, e.g. the assembly of a machine, that needs 8 hours of work.
Both employees are capable of assembling the machine and the aim is to
assemble it as soon as possible.

The start day of the task ("start no earlier than" - constraint) was set to
8:00 am on a certain day.

It seems that MS Project assignes the working hours half/half to both
resources.
The result is:

Employee A works from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM (4 hours)
Employee B works from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM (4 hours)

Now about my problem :
I would like Employee A to work from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM (6 hours) and
employee B from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM (2 hours)

In that way, eg. the machine could be shipped out the same day.

Of course, I can modify the assignments manually.
But I intend to handle 20 or 30 employees and maybe around 50 tasks.
I think this would be too much work.

Is there any way to tell Project not to assign the working hours equally to
the multiple resources but
to assign them in a smart way, so that the task can be finished as soon as
possible?

I don't know how to continue so I would appreciate any help on that.

P.S. I use the "fixed work" setting

Hi Adrian

Not sure if there is way to do that.

But, why not just use 1 resouce ID to cover both resoure A & B eg Machinist;
and create a calendar for them that is from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM & from 3:00
PM to 7:00 PM

First, thank you for the answer, Jan De Messemaeker.

Thanks for your reply as well, Colin.

I would want to assign several employees (maybe up to 10) to one task.
With each employee having a different schedule:
eg one works monday to friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and another one works
tuesday to saturday 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM)
I tried to define them as one resource but I couldn't solve the problem
that the number of employees (units) changes during the day.
I only found a way to set the availability (number of available units) for
each resource for a whole day.

That's why I then tried to define each employee as a resource...

P.S.
I'll be away till next wednesday, just in case you'll be wondering about my
late answer on any upcoming post
