how format as decimal if decimal <> 0?

Thanks Leo, it works.
However, can I make it so it refers to its own cell?
In other words, if I type =VALUE(LEFT(C6,100)) in cell C6,
I get an error message about circular referencing.

I want to have it so when I input a number into a cell,
the number it stores might be 2.0 or whatever, but it
displays 2.
Any ideas?
