How get record count in DataSheet view

When I first open a table in Datasheet view, the status bar tells me
that I'm on record 1 but it doesn't tell me how many records there are.
At some point I see it eventually tells me "Record xxx...of xxxx" but I
never know how to force it to display that second number, total row
count. How/when does it eventually display the row count? Thanks.

Ugh is right. Then how I can I manually get this figure without loading
all records into memory?
