See my post of a day ago in this same forum for my prior
situation. I'm posting this followup as an FYI. My
OfficeXP had gotten to the point where it wouldn't
uninstall itself or run.
Since this is an install issue, it gets free unlimited
support from MS if you pay the toll call and wait on
hold. With a handy 2 cents per minute phone card, I
placed the call. The following describes the steps the
tech support guy walked me through.
There is a great utility called the "Windows Installer
Cleanup". Put this phrase in the Microsoft homepage's
search box. Select the first download. It should be
titled the Office 2000 Installer Cleanup. It works with
Office XP even though XP is not listed. Save this
download to disk. Run the program after downloading. It
installs the cleanup program. Run the cleanup program
from its Start menu entry. Select OfficeXP from the list
of installed programs. It will get rid of the registry
entries that are screwing everything up. You can then
reinstall OfficeXP and it won't ask for the activation
code. OfficeXP then functioned perfectly for me. Try the
updates again at your own risk, but now you know how to
get rid of the terminally ill installation!
