How is Open Office compared to Microsoft Office?

Someone just told me about Open Office http://www.openoffice.org/
which appears to be a freeware clone of Microsoft Office.

Have any of you tried it, and if so, how does it stack up against
the expensive thing?

Can it save all files in the word processor, as Word files, as
default?

Post Q in alt.comp.freeware or
Google is your friend. Try it.
