For any given word, you can use the Find dialog. Select an instance of the
word, press Ctrl+F to open the dialog (which will have the selected word in
the "Find what" box), and click Find In. The default choice is Main Document
(if the insertion point is in a header or footer, you'll also get a choice
of Headers and Footers; if a block of text is selected, Current Selection
will be included). Word will then select every instance of the word and
return the message "Word found x items matching this criteria."
It gets even better in Word 2010: If you select a word and press Ctrl+F, the
Navigation pane opens with the Find tab showing; all instances are already
selected, with a heading of "x matches."
For Word 2003 users, the same option requires checking "Highlight all items
found," selecting a range, and then clicking Find All.
