How much free disk space should an app server have?

All,
How much free disk space should my app have? My gut tells me that I
want about 5-10 gig free. But I am having a hard time finding any sort
of reference or authoritative source to validate that.

We have a small farm deployment with an app server and a db server.
MOPS 2007.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this. Your input is
greatly appreciated.

Don't think there is one specially made for PS2007.

Generally, you'd need to have 15% disk free just so the defragmenter can run
(some custom tools require less, but generally).. if you are doing ANY
scheduled backups on the app box itself, you are likely to consume your RAM
size *1.5 (e.g. if you have 8GB, then system will consume 12GB for page
file), your page file may be on a SAN/different partition, not sure but
should consider it..

So (highly hypothetical and subjective here..), if I have a box with 4GB Ram
and 100GB disk capacity, where lets say system plus Project Server components
consume 40-50 GB, I would not feel comfortable with anything less than 30GB
free at any time. Now, you have SQL server on it as well, so your first point
of recommendation should be the DB Admin. He ought to know better for the
specific envionment because SQL is the most resource hungry out of the
services runing on the box... so if you make SQL happy + all the free space
you need for backups, MOSS will be fine as well.

in my opinion, overall, 5GB seems very slim these days...

Also, depends on what kind of performance you are after..
try checking out "Microsoft Office Project Server 2007 Performance Testing "
white paper...

Cheers,
Vaso
