Click on a cell, hold the shift key and click on another to select a
contiguous range. Or, click on a cell, then control click on other cells.

Thanks Bob:
the shift key worked fine, but the control key did not.

When I click control, Excel just selected the new cell, only, and brought up the contexual menu with it, strange?

No, not strange at all. The correct key is Command (the Apple key) to make
multiple selection, the same you'd use in the Finder for example.

In Windows, the correct key would have been Control.
