I'll answer the second question first: For all practial purposes, you can't.
If you think that you will lose the password, do NOT password protect the
database. There are some companies who claim to be able to break into a
secured database; however, it isn't cheap or 100% effective. Where I work we
give our boss a list of all database and vital OS passwords. He puts it in a
safe that only he and his boss knows the combination. Therefore three people
know the passwords to any of our databases. We change passwords at least
every 90 days so it is easy to forget.

For your first question, you need to open the database exclusively. Get
everyone else out of it. Open Access. Use the File, Open dialog and select
your database. Go down to the Open button in the dialog box and hit the drop
down. Select Open Exclusive.
