How stop Outlook from opening on start up

Hi,
[Outlook 2003, Windows XP SP2]

Years ago, I added Outlook 2003 to the programs that open when I start up my
computer. Now, I no longer want Outlook to open, but I can't stop it from
opening by unchecking it on the Start Up list.

Other programs, such as my backup app, a sticky note program and my
anti-virus/security program seem to respond normally to being enabled or
disabled for startup, but Outlook seems to have a will of its own.

Is there a special procedure for keeping it from opening every time I start
my computer?

Depends on which method you used to start it automatically.

I think have been trying the procedure you suggest to keep Outlook from
starting up, but after unchecking Outlook from the startup list and
restarting the computer, a Windows message tells me that the computer is
running in Diagnostic mode, and that if I want to restart in Normal mode,
the changes I just made will be undone. So, how do I run my computer with
the drivers I need, if I want to remove a program, such as Outlook, from the
startup?

When you wrote "Remove Outlook from the startup list", did you mean
something more than just unchecking Outlook on the list? Is there a way to
actually remove an entry from the startup list?

Sorry to ignore you - my news reader does not show your reply. I had to go
to Google Groups to find it.

I had used the method that Pat Willener suggested, and tried it again after
his message, in case I had been doing something wrong. Perhaps I'm confused
by the message screen that appears after restart. It seems to offer only
choices that will run Windows in a "stripped down" mode, or, if I choose
Normal mode, the changes I had made to the startup list are undone.

I have a copy of PC Magazine's Startup Cop utility, but have not wanted to
use it, since a number of users reported serious system problems with it.
Perhaps Startup Inspector would be more benign and helpful to a non-techy
like me.

That doesn't answer my question. There are various options to autostart
applications on login. Some of them are;
-shortcut in the Startup folder
-registry setting in the Run hive
-scheduled task

Which method are you using?

Roady,
I'm back from a holiday break, and, again, your reply about the varieties of
autostart did not appear in my news reader (Outlook Express 6.00.29), but I
just checked Google Groups, and found there. I never knew there were
different methods of autostart.

Before I found that you had asked about the specific autostart method, which
probably would have led to a solution, I checked out Startup Inspector
suggest by Pat Willener. Comments from users seemed to indicate that It
worked without serious problems. I tried it, and it worked. I no longer have
Outlook on my Startup list. My computer and its anti-virus/security program
(Kaspersky 7) seem to start significantly faster now - an unexpected
benefit.
