When I save a document, it works fine but when I go back to open the file I
find two files -one that is correct and one that starts with a horizontal
squiggle ~ then a dollar sign $ a seemingly random letter and then the file
name.It doesn't happen on every saved document but is really cluttering up my
files.

The ~$ files are not copies of your document. They're one kind of temporary
file that Word uses (see http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632 for an
explanation of all the types). Word is supposed to delete those files when
you close the document, but sometimes it can't. Read
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm to find out how to
clean up the leftovers.

thank you, Jay.That was excellent advice.I've put up with that problem for
about 3 years ans been told so many "cures"- one was that it was bcause
msWorks was installed and I uninstalled it because of that erroneous advice.
The useful bit was
"But first it will be necessary to configure Explorer to display hidden
files and the extensions of know file types (Tools > Folder Options)"
It turned out hidden files were being displayed.I checked "Do not show
hidden files " and all the troublesome folders have gone

Actually, some of the temp files *are* copies of the document. Under certain
circumstances, Word saves a ~wrlxxxx.tmp file each time you save (or each
time after the first if you have backups enabled), and each of those files
can be opened and is a complete copy of a previous saved version. According
to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632, this type of file is a
Clipboard file, so it is unclear to me why they are created (even if you
haven't been copying and pasting), but they demonstrably are. But they are
deleted when the document is closed, along with the ~&lename.doc "owner"
file.

This is interesting but my problem has been that the files aren't deleted and
yes they can be opened.I suppse it's a bit academic now as the problem seems
to be solved except that my hard disk might be filling up in half the time if
the files are still being duplicated but I've just hidden them?
I have used the Show office clipbard many times as opposed to merely pasting
items singly from the clipboard.Could this be a clue?

If Word is not deleting them when you close the document, then that's
another issue. We haven't seen it reported much lately, so I've forgotten
what the answer is (when I did answer such questions, it was only to parrot
an answer from Terry Farrell), but it is something outside Word and has to
do with a network server.

As Suzanne says, it was a long time ago! I think it was either the need to
update the Windows Server to the latest Servicepack or it was to do with the
settings in the ISA server firewall (most likely). It's too far back for me
to remember exactly what caused the problem.

Ah! That is coming back. SMB package signing was due to a mistake in one of
the servicepacks but was eventually corrected in HotFix download. As long as
everything is patched up to date, that should not be a problem now.

Unfortunately it is still happening.I am able to hide the files by choosing
that option in Folder options but How can I stop copies being saved-as i
think every document must be taking double space.
