How to: Acc 2003 export to delimited file

M

M Skabialka

A user on Access 2003 asked how to export a table as a delimited file.

I tried to talk him through it by phone while I am following using Access
2000. I get a box asking what kind of file, I choose Text file, so does he.

Then I get one asking what kind of delimiter I want to use - he says he
doesn't get this - it goes straight to creating a comma delimited file with
no other questions. We want to use | as a delimiter and not have "" around
text. It works for me on Acc2000.

I don't have a Acc2003 machine to look at - how can I help him?

Thanks,
Mich

For 2003, make sure the table is selected in the list then choose File /
Export

In the export dialogue, enter the export file name and select the Save as
Type from the list as Text files (*.txt;*.csv;*.tab;*.asc). Select Export
and the export options box appears. Select Delimited then Next. Select Other
and enter your separator. In the text qualifier box, select {none}. Select
Next then Finish.

Send him a copy of your "schema.ini" file that is created for each export.
You can edit the delimiter line to give you the desired results.

I searched my entire PC, this file is not on my machine (WINXPPro, OFF2K).
If I had found it and sent it to him, what would he have done with it? And
since I don't have it, what else could he try?

Thanks,
Mich

You said to "Select Export and the export options box appears. "

That is the problem - it doesn't appear - it immediately creates the file,
without asking what kind of file or export options.

Are you sure they have selected the correct export file type (Text files
(*.txt;*.csv;*.tab;*.asc)) in the file open dialogue?

Yes

Are you sure that they are NOT checking Save formatted in the file open
dialogue?
